Meals on Wheels

Get ready to lean over the trunk of your car and huddle in the corners of parking lots to eat your meal; the food truck revolution has hit Miami. A longtime west coast institution has transcended its LA roots and hit cities across the east coast. Miami's food truck mania may only be in its infancy, but these early adopters are cooking up a gourmet storm.

Next time you're hungry, log on to Twitter to see which streets and parking lots Miami's food trucks are hitting that day. Get started by following these three mobile food mecas first, foodies! They are Miami's first and best food trucks.

Latin Burger & Taco (Twitter handle: @latinburger)

If you see a shimmering black and pink truck drive by, follow it. Latin Burger & Taco rolled onto Miami’s streets earlier this year establishing them as one of the most popular and delicious mobile kitchens on the streets. Texan owner Jim Heins has combined the freshest ingredients around to design a menu filled with gourmet burgers and tacos, including the famous Latin Macho, a burger made of chorizo, chuck and sirloin, topped with Oaxaca cheese, caramelized onion, jalapenos, and a sauce so good it’s named “avocadolicious sauce.” If you’re craving something a bit more Tex-Mex try the ‘3 amigos’, an $8 sampler of the truck’s three soft tacos, including pulled pork, chicken mole, and chicken tomatillo; three tacos with three incredible signature sauces that will surely convert you into a mobile food junkie.

And if the food isn’t enough to keep you coming back, do it for the karma. Latin Burger has partnered with Project Vacant Streets, an initiative designed to help homeless move off the streets and back into the workforce. Latin Burger serves the streets with mouth-watering recipes and slatherings of kindness.

Gastro Pod (Twitter handle: @gastropodmiami)

© James Belvin Miami native, and Gastro Pod proprietor Chef Jeremiah, knows exactly what his city craves. His converted shiny silver 1962 Airstream trailer has attracted thousands of followers since it first appeared on the streets earlier this year. Perhaps because of its innovative take on street food, and because the menu is always changing to include the season’s freshest fish, meats and produce.

But the best thing about the pod may be its single-digit prices. The "Old dirt dawg,” a hot dog with some serious upscale attitude is only $4. The Mo' Better Burger, which boasts a combination of short rib and sirloin, starts at $6 and goes up with the addition of crazy good add ons like homemade pickles and pod sauce, a fried egg, and american cheese. If you're looking for something different, try the pulled pork tacos. Vegetarians get some love with the crispy white corn cake – a sweet white corn cake piled high with slaw and a poached egg.

Yellow Submarine (Twitter handle: @yellowtwiter)

Music and food lovers rejoice! The Yellow Submarine has emerged and is making it's way around Miami. The bright yellow truck is run by the Alarcon brothers who love to cook as much as they love to listen to famous tunes. A quick look at the menu show that the names of the sandwiches are named after some classic oldies. There's Lady Madonna (a ham and provolone sandwich topped with the usual fixins plus pesto and garlic sauce), Imagine (just like Lady Madonna only with turkey), and Killer Queen (just like Imagine only with buffalo chicken) to name a few.

OK, so maybe it's not very imaginative, but it is yummy. Especially due to the Colombian spices used in its meals. The top two sold items, the Yellow Dog ($4.50) and Yellow Burger ($6), are topped with pineapple and sauces from the brothers’ homeland. The burger and dog are then sprinkled with crushed potato chips, a Colombian trademark that will leave you wanting ¡mucho mas!

The Colombian-style food truck tends to stay in the Kendall area of Miami and stays open late for those of you who get the late night munchies.
