Zappa Conjures Zappa at ROTHBURY
As tribute bands go, it doesn't get much better than having a band member with a birthright to play the music. But that's just one of the things that makes Zappa Plays Zappa one of the crown jewels of tribute bands. The other things is it's talented front-man, Dwezil Zappa. Dweezil Zappa isn't just the spitting image of his father, Frank Zappa, he shreds his guitar the same way too - with serious skills.
Filling the shoes of a famous parent comes with serious weight. Thankfully, Dweezil Zappa is up to the task. The younger Zappa has had a number of successes on his own including playing on Winger's cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and even acting with Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink. It's a lot easier to fill the shoes of your Father when you've filled your own first.
Zappa Plays Zappa took the Sherwood Court stage at ROTHBURY, on July 4th and fans got to experience something zap-tastic. Besides witnessing the on-fire Frank Zappa covers, killer guitar skills and ear pleasing vocals, concertgoers were treated to the wacky brand of humor the band has to offer. "Joe needs more panties on his drum kit!" Dweezil shouted to the crowd, encouraging them to throw panties on stage old-school-rock-show style.
The group played their way through a tight, skilled hour and a half set with musicianship being the central focus. There was not one missed opportunity or sour note.
As you might expect, die-hard Zappa fans were definitely well-represented at ROTHBURY. One Rothburian displayed his affection for Zappa by erecting a homemade camp flag at his campsite that read, "Camp Sheik Yerbouti" as it waved in the wind.
