Ruby's Bar in Hell's Kitchen
Rudy's Bar and Grill serves cheap beer and free hot dogs.
Still need more information? Fine, fine.
Established in the 1930's, Rudy's lies in the heart of Hells Kitchen. Discovered by the trendier crowds in recent years, this divey relic boasts a bar, several booths, and a backyard patio (which is currently under construction.) Outside the front door stands a giant pig in a red suit-jacket that is usually flanked by young drunks taking photos or old drunks attempting to maintain their balance. On weekends the crowds spill over into the street exposing the various patrons in their various states of drunkenness.
Inside the spac
e the red leather booths are patched over with strips of red duct tape and sit low and deep, providing the perfect seating coves for small groups. The jukebox usually blares the biggest hits from Nickleback or Oaisis (circa 1991?), which can be painful, but if you are early or patient you can punch in some Rolling Stones or Beatles and actually hear it play.
The house brews, "Rudy's Blonde" and "Rudy's Red" are the cheapest on the menu and if you can stomach the somewhat watery taste then you can certainly enjoy a social night sharing a large plastic pitcher for under eight bucks.
Due to its proximity to the Port Authority Bus Terminal the bar can sometimes be overrun by the after work and commuter crowd, but during the day (and sometimes early morning) Rudy's is home to old and seasoned drunks, who sit at the bar and comfortably discuss everything from politics to women.
Although Rudy's has become a sort of popular dive bar the place still embodies the atmosphere of a casual beer joint, providing the cheap prices, friendly staff, and dingy atmosphere that allows patrons to wear casual clothes and relax while filling up on pork products and too many carbs.
Which is, at times, exactly what you need.
