The Postelles Bring it Back
When you think of indie rock a certain darkness comes to mind. A certain rugged truth. Not so with the Postelles – they're too busy channeling the '50s with delightfully sincere pop-sensible tunes you could dance to, so long as that dance includes a hip swing and a clap.
Listen closely and you'll hear The Who, Iggy Pop and The Smiths. That's because the beginning of many of their songs borrows heavily (in come cases) and lightly (in others) from a lot of the great music that came before it. In some cases, like in the song "Stella," "borrows" seems too kind a term. Listen to it and you'll do a double take, thinking that somewhere a television must be tuned to a Royal Caribbean commercial. Still, the Postelles produce fun music with a sense of humor. They're not afraid of channeling a lighter, freer, more bubble-gum enhanced time.
In fact, that's exactly what they're going for. When they sat down with Rum Bum's Danielle Hartnett they told her that what they really wanted to be was an "old school girl's Motown band." Barring a time machine and some rather complicated surgery, the Postelles will have to stick to what they're doing now.
After fest season, you'll have to catch the Postelles on the NYC club circuit, or wait patiently until they break out beyond that.
