Moneypenny Takes it Back
Moneypenny plays fun club tunes that make you want to wear yellow vinyl, ankle boots and lipstick – lots of lipstick. That's because, damn it, this music makes it cool to be a girl again.
Moneypenny is a pair of DJs that go by the names Mother Hubbard (Chess Hubbard) and A-Cup (Jessica Gonyea). Together, they join forces to take back their sexuality, their feminism, their utter girlness. With it, they own the room and the boom with music that is bounce-happy and smart. So far, they've only got a handful of original tunes; they're working right now with producer Simon Perry to produce more, more, more.
Their mixes are different but equally good in that they accomplish the same bodysnatching politics under the guise of good, clean fun. In one, "Lost My Lolli," they sample a Debbie Gibson tune and it's like a momentary lapse into bad radio, a bad music memory made better by the feeling it projects: That's all over now. What's left is hip-shaking, body-twisting, hair-tossing fun. Because, damn it, you own this moment.
