The Low Anthem Speaks Up
The Low Anthem makes heartbreakingly beautiful music. If there wasn't more space to fill, I'd leave it at that. But because one man's heartbreakingly beautiful is another man's Slayer, I'll continue...
The serene vocals of Ben Knox Miller compliment the sweetly picked acoustic guitar, while Jocie Adams' harmonies will make you smile. Through it all, Jeff Prystowsky's strong bass stylings keep The Low Anthem's songs on their course as we peek through car windows (in "The Horizon is a Beltway"), and ticket booths (in "Ticket Taker") and across the straights of time (in "Charlie Darwin").
It is a wonder that music so beautiful and so...for lack of a better word, true...comes out of musicians so young. One wonders what they've been doing all their lives, because what they see when they look out at the world is so clear, so precise, so dead-on, that their music sounds as though they're channeling long-gone, and well-worn, souls.
Their second full-length album, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, is full of tunes you'll want to keep on your iPod just in case you need a friend, or an emergency soundtrack to a really bad day. Or even a beautiful one. Or, for when you find yourself looking out the window and wondering why it's all there.
