Ultra Music Festival

Bring On the Noize

Ultra got a serious dose of Euro lovin’ throughout the weekend. The much-anticipated set by Boys Noize was the last treat on the Bayfront Stage before the sun went down on day two. German-born Alexander Ridha has been slapping Electro-rock onto his ones and twos since he was 16, jumping into his musical jeans ten years earlier. Ridha backs his homegrown label Boysnoize Records, which celebrated its pre-Ultra festivities over at LOUIS in the Gansevoort South Friday night at a packed house in the French-inspired dungeon.

Gracing the stage around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, Boys Noize drew an impressive crowd, which lead to a dirty dance party with thousands of beat junkies getting down to his quick, electronic aesthetics. He mixed up more than half of 2007’s Oi Oi Oi, including transitions from “Arcade Robot,” “& Down,” “My Moon My Man,” “Lava Lava” and “3 Bass.” Boys Noize’s mechanic sound was easily singled out around the grounds of Bicentennial, which proves his unique style really brings something to the table, when so many other DJs are seemingly carbon copies these days.

Throughout his hour-plus set (and yes, he went over but the sea kept begging for more), Boys Noize produced another one of those trippy-induced slideshows – this time featuring flashes of animals -- always popular eye candy behind the turntables.

The ultimate highlight of the set was the mash into 1991 Euro single “Get Ready For This,” which brought hands up high in the air, flashing everyone back to the partying days of the ‘90s. It’s always appreciated when artists who are creating new flavor hit up loveable throwbacks, especially when it’s someone like Boys Noize, who knows how to do it right. Thanks, Boys Noize for another cacophony of euphoria.
