Mixing Things Up With the Freestylers
Breakbeats might seem too old school to keep you interested, but the Freestylers have made a successful name out of remixing crowd-pleasing tracks that have breakdancers and party fiends always ready to make moves. Add a helping of ‘80s Dance/Techno in with a generous serving of Hip-Hop and then sprinkle with some Reggae, Jungle and Drum and Bass so things don’t go sour, now that’s the Freestylers way. Preserving the classic taste of old school Breakbeats while adding in a fresh dose of Experimental Electronica keeps this group on the grind. When you’ve climbed to the Top of the Pops (literally, the guys made a cameo on the UK music staple with “B-Boy Stance” in ’96), you know you’ve got a great, progressive chemistry forming.
The once-triplet formed from a Hip-Hop-inspired throwdown between Matt Canton, Aston Harvey and Andrew Galea produced popular club jam “Drop The Bomb” off the Freestyler EP, which eventually soon saw the departure of Galea. The duo of Canton and Harvey, however, sought a goldmine in their art of sound, and went on to create a stage presence that included an 11-piece band, complete with breakdancers to add show value. Their creative minds have led to a strong anchor in the Electronic music realm, and with four studio albums under their belt (a fifth one on the way), that's more than we can say about other mixmasters who've been in the biz for a dozen years.
Since the 21st century hit, the Freestylers have graduated their sound to new heights, while still staying true to their love for Breakbeats, Jungle and Drum and Bass, they’re found ways to sneak in exceptional quality with tonal harmonies and synth riffs. These Euro remix stars aren’t just a couple of blokes from the UK, they know their bass beats better than any rapper-gone-producer off the streets of Brooklyn.
When taking time off from scratching on the decks, these jokesters like to take advantage of downtime. They’re good-humored and relaxed, and they certainly know how to show Miami some love.
