Catch (and Protect) More Marlin

Fun as it is, offshore fishing can be challenging. Just as much as you want to catch them, those big, beautiful billfish want to stay right where they are. So, to catch them, you need to know what you're doing. You need advice. So you, friend, should head on over to the Billfish Expo, set to take place February 13 at the Miami Marriot Biscayne Bay.

There, you’ll get your fill of billfish advice and information from some of the biggest names in bill-fishing including world renowned Captains scientists, who are pioneering – and using – new techniques to catch billfish while keeping their populations intact.

Captain Skip Smith, who’s heading up the expo, promises that “there won’t be any average questions.” Rather, the experts will be on hand to teach valuable secrets; from something as simple to how to use specific lures, to what scientists have learned about where and how fish live through RFID tagging and current studies.

“People will learn about the intricacies of the sport,” Smith says. These are things you can’t learn by walking into a pro shop and talking to a sales person. Things you can only learn by experience. This way, participants will benefit from the knowledge of people who have, like Smith, spent their lives on the water. People who have collectively caught more than 100,000 billfish and are responsible for more than 250 world records.

That’s not something you can get every day. Or at your average boat show or seminar.

“We’re really just trying to give back to the average fisherman,” Smith says of the reason behind the expo. “We want to meet them and help educate them on how they can be better fisherman” – and better stewards of the environment.
