Say Hi To Guy (Harvey)
Art makes a grand appearance on the second floor of the Miami Convention Center this weekend in the form of billfish sculptures in wood, marine life tokens in decorative glass, and contemporary renderings of fish on acrylic-slathered canvas. But you can't talk marine art without mentioning Guy Harvey. The modern-day hero of aquatic artwork gave visitors a thrill by making a special appearance at the Miami International Boat Show to sign his newest book "Panama Paradise" along with his other posters and prints.
"Are you from Panama?" he asked one of his fans whilst signing. "Whom shall I make it out to?" Generous and engaging, Harvey was surrounded by dozens of his own original artworks ranging in cost from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. His works simply gush with color such that the water he paints looks wet and you want to make sure to keep a sharp eye on that shark in the corner.
Harvey's fans may not know he's an avid angler, devout family man, marine biologist, and conservationist. His Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation provides grants to conservation-oriented marine research, and his research institute at Nova Southeastern University is one of the few dedicated exclusively to protecting our finned friends.
His foundation accepts donations from level Trout ($25) to Marlin ($100,000), or you can support Guy and his efforts by purchasing one of his books or art pieces. And if you're into wearable art, spring for one of his colorful ties.
