In the past year, almost a dozen new steakhouses have hit South Beach, but let's be honest here, who's really out for kobe and wagyu in this economy? This July 4th go see some fireworks and then experience some of your own along your palate. The folks at 8 oz. Burger Bar are grilling up choice-burgers, sides and plenty of additions to lure you in off the beach for a light, satisfying meal.

Cozy and Quaint...In South Beach?

South Beach has its share of upscale eateries and dives, but 8 oz. falls right in the middle. With its close-knit, casual setting you are free to stroll in with sandy feet or Jimmy Choo's, it's entirely up to you.

With high tops, booths, traditional tables and roomy bar seating, it's always nice to pick your seating arrangement - that is if you make it in before the lunch or dinner rush. With a jukebox to play the jams and flat screens to keep score of the night's primetime games, there's a certain mellow mood that surrounds this new hot spot. And, since the successful debut of 8 oz. Burger Bar on Alton Road just five months ago, the ownership decided to take on a second location right down the street on Ocean Drive. So, pick your poison kids - streetside or beachside?

It's the original 8 oz. burger that is first on the menu, so if you're a traditional kind of burger guy or gal, special sauce, lettuce, pickle, tomato and onion might hit the spot. If you're on the hunt for a tenderer patty, go for the grass-fed burger. Order it on the medium side, and you'll be able to appreciate the time and dedication that goes into the soft, beefy goodness, straight from White Oak Pastures in Georgia. In the mood for Grecian goodness? The Niman Ranch lamb burger is a savory blend of garlic aoli, sliced tomato, onion, pickle, charred escarole and roasted mushrooms. Ask for extra garlic aoli, and thank me later - with your hot mess of breath and all. There are sauces, condiments, cheeses and extras to dress up your burger, so be creative in building your edible masterpiece.

Start off with quirky tastes like the mini kobe corndog, fried olives or short rib grilled cheese. As far as sides go, fried pickles, stout-battered onion rings and truffled potato skins are a welcome accompaniment.

All Fun and Late Night Games

When late-night arrives, 8 oz. burger bar has happy hour specials and a beer pong table for those who like to drink competitively. Mondays is karaoke night, so warm up those pipes with a few microbrews - they've got Shipyard, Holy Mackerel, Dogfish and Rogue, to name a few - or a specialty cocktail - Margarita Bandita for tequila lovers and Lost in Translation for a citrus and whiskey treat. After hours also calls for some old school board games, so try your rusty hand at Connect Four, Sorry or Candy Land, and have at a drinking game or two. At least you know they'll be munchies in case you need to sober up!
